There is this one particular site which the Silly Girl loves. It’s called ‘Best Quotes’.Simple day-to-day quotes that gives us invisible support to just hang in there and realise that you aren’t the only one. And on this particular day, this post by Best Quotes touched me. You can read the whole post here or visit www.bestquotesfb.blogspot.com for more inspiring quotes of the day.

http://bestquotesfb.blogspot.com/2012/02/women-are-like-apples-on-tree.html

Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree.

The men don’t want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they just get the rotten apples from the ground that aren’t as good, but easy. So the apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, THEY’RE amazing.

They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who’s brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.

’… let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity’ – Psalm 98

The Silly Girl was watching the cartoon ‘UP’ for the first time this evening and she was absolutely touched by movie, and especially the promise between Carl and Ellie.

Life could be simple but it can truly be an adventure, but what matters is who we walk through life with…

Today is dad’s birthday dinner and the birthday boy has specifically mentioned that he would like to have dinner with the family at Beng Thin Hoon Kee. I am not surprised by this choice since 1)he has always loved the food there and 2)this is one of the few places left, that actually serves ‘Gui Hua Chi’ (Stir Fried Omelette with Sharks’ Fin & wrapped in lettuce) on its menu. Taking charge tonight, the Silly Girl made the following orders – which were obviously dad’s favourites…

Crabmeat and Fish Maw Soup

The Crabmeat and Fish Maw Soup is a must-have at Beng Thin.  One of their most popular orders, this dish is basically plastered in every set menu that they have, served. The soup was thick with a generous offering of fish maw and crab meat. Flavourful and tasty, yet not overly filling, this was definitely a good dish to start dinner. Our ordering of small was excellent as it translated to around 4 full bowls of soup.

Yummy Seafood Claypot

Dad loves his clay pot and so we tried the seafood clay pot this evening. Good servings of seafood - prawn, squid, scallops, mushrooms, shellfish and sea cucumber; the dish was surprisingly light on the palate and light on the tummy. For those who love a heavier taste on their clay pot dishes, this might be a slight disappointment

Steamed Pomfret

The uniqueness of this restaurant is that despite being called a Hokkien restaurant, they serve pretty decent Teochew dishes. One of which has to be the steamed pomfret. Putting a fresh and tender piece of pomfret to steam, together with light stock, tomatoes plum, salted vegetables, slivers of ginger slices and spring onions, what you get is a delicious fish dish that was light. We went for the fish stock first, and not surprisingly, the stock was bursting with flavours which brought out the taste of the fish.

Fried Or Lua or Fried Oysters

My must-have and my declared star of this restaurant has to be its oyster omelette (Or Jian). Mix the eggs, chilli and tapioca starch and fry it to faultlessly thin crisp and lacing it with mid-sized oysters laced, sounds like decadent heaven to me and indeed, this is what the dish essentially is. Imagine the thin crisp tapioca starch ala in a crispy thin crêpe mode, and mixed with the creamy oysters… Only downside to this dish tonight was that it was a little oily – not sodden, just slightly oiler than usual. But still a long-awaited treat for me, nonetheless.

Dad's Favourite Sharks' Fin stir fried with Egg and Wrapped in Fresh Lettuce

Dad’s favourite dish came rather quickly. This dish uses the same recipe as 蚂蚁上树 and sharks’ fin is used in replacement for the minced pork. Refreshing and flavourful, this is one dish that can’t really be found voluntarily in many restaurants’ menus (since demand is low due to price point), but dad really loved the one served tonight. And the combs of sharks’ fins were plentiful in the full splendour. A simple dish with a simple taste, and Dad’s absolute favourite.

Longevity Mee Sua

Okay. All that saying about birthdays having to eat longevity noodles. Dad decided to order its’ longevity mee sua this evening – all for the word ‘Longevity’. Definitely not one of the must-haves at Beng Thin, I didn’t  like it because of the thick mee sua being used (reminded me more of rice vermicelli than anything else), light gravy (which was covered by the taste of  meesua) and seafood (again!). Definitely not something that I would choose for my carbs.
Beng Thin Hoon Kee is Lovely restaurant that serves good Hokkien food and pretty reasonable prices. This is one place that I know that I won’t be disappointed by the standard of its dishes (maybe the mee sua).

Beng Thin Hoon Kee can be found at 65 Chulia Street, #05-02, OCBC Centre

The Silly Girl has been searching around for some mean Korean Food and with some sheer luck (because of the seatings) and good recommendations by her colleagues, she found herself in this quaint little Korean restaurant along Circular Road this afternoon, during lunch.

The Busy Afternoon Crowd...

Pretty unassuming place (you might probably miss if if you didn’t peer your head out hard enough to lookout for the banner) if you’d asked me and walking in, what you see is literally what you’d get. Small and very focused on serving their packed lunchtime afternoon crowd, this little restaurant Seoulria is known to serve 1) their special lunch sets at S$9.90 and 2) a mean kimchi stew (not soup but stew) amongst other Korean dishes. Having seated down, the Girls were quickly offered their servings of korean brown rice tea and side dishes (which were delicious especially the seasoned anchovies, kimchi, spring onion shoots)

This afternoon, the Silly Girl and her colleagues ordered the Kimchi Jigae stew set. A good first impression was made when the Silly Girl asked for beef with the Kimchi stew, and the waitress mentioned that kimchi stew was tastes best with kimchi stew… and she was right. The dish arrived bubbling angrily in it’s fiery hot red liquid, chockful of ingredients, accompanied by a mean spicy kimchi taste… And yes, the pork belly was scrumptious!

Kimchi Jigae (Kimchee Stew, not soup)
